Summer means vacations, relaxation, ice cream, and outdoor meals. It’s a time to enjoy… but also to take care of your oral health.
Routine changes, high temperatures, and certain summer habits can affect your teeth and gums without you even realizing it.
That’s why, at Clínica Dental Ceballos we’re sharing 10 simple but effective tips to help your smile enjoy the summer too.
1. Stick to your oral hygiene routine — even on vacation
Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean your oral care should take a break.
-
Pack a travel dental kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.
-
Brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes.
-
Use floss or interdental brushes daily.
Consistency is the key to a healthy smile — no matter where you are.
2. Avoid sugary and acidic drinks
Soft drinks, cocktails, and packaged juices all have one thing in common: sugar and/or acid, which erode enamel and increase the risk of cavities.
-
Choose plain water, sugar-free sparkling water, or unsweetened cold herbal teas instead.
-
If you do consume acidic drinks, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to avoid damaging the enamel.
3. Stay hydrated — your mouth needs it too
Heat and dehydration can reduce saliva flow, and saliva is one of your mouth’s natural defenses against cavities and harmful bacteria.
-
Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.
-
Avoid drinks that can dry out your mouth, such as alcohol, salty beverages, or energy drinks.
4.Watch out for UV rays — your lips are at risk too!
When applying sunscreen, we often forget a crucial area: the lips. The skin on your lips is thin, delicate, and constantly exposed to the sun’s rays.
-
Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.
-
Reapply several times a day, especially if you’re at the beach or pool.
This not only prevents sunburn, but also reduces the risk of oral cancer and premature aging.
5. Be careful with very cold foods — they can cause sensitivity
Ice cream, slushies, or iced drinks are summer favorites, but they can trigger or worsen dental sensitivity, especially if you have gum recession or worn enamel.
-
Enjoy these foods slowly and avoid direct contact with your teeth.
-
If you notice discomfort, talk to your dentist — you may benefit from fluoride treatments or desensitizing toothpaste.
6. Be mindful of pool chlorine
Chlorine can alter the pH of your mouth and contribute to enamel erosion, especially if you swim frequently.
-
Rinse your mouth with clean water after leaving the pool.
-
Stay well-hydrated to prevent the dry mouth effect that chlorine can cause.
7. Don’t use your teeth as tools
Opening bottles, tearing tape, or biting packaging with your teeth may seem convenient — but it’s highly damaging.
These habits can lead to cracks, chips, enamel wear, or even compromise aesthetic treatments like veneers or crowns. Always use the right tools — your teeth are not one of them!
8. Eat smile-friendly foods
Water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, or apples help naturally clean your teeth and stimulate saliva production.
-
Avoid sticky foods like hard candies, gummies, or heavily processed snacks.
-
Include calcium-rich foods (yogurt, cheese, almonds) to help strengthen your teeth and support enamel health.
9. Book a dental cleaning after summer
Summer often brings changes in diet, routine, and increased exposure to risk factors like acidic drinks or irregular brushing.
-
A professional cleaning removes tartar build-up and helps prevent future issues.
-
Plus, your smile will look brighter and fresher for those summer photo memories!
10. Don’t ignore dental discomfort
If you experience pain, inflammation, bleeding gums, or a lost filling, don’t ignore it just because you’re on vacation.
Your smile doesn’t take a vacation — and neither should your oral care.
Taking care of your mouth in summer is just as important as any other time of year. In fact, it’s the perfect moment to prevent damage, enjoy worry-free, and keep your smile healthy and confident in every photo.
At Clínica Dental Ceballos, we take care of your smile all year round.
Don’t forget to schedule your post-summer check-up.
If you have questions or feel something isn’t right, call your dental clinic or book a consultation.
Because when it comes to oral health, acting early makes all the difference.
