Dental tartar is one of the most common and most overlooked oral health problems. Although it may seem only an aesthetic issue, tartar can be the source of more serious problems, such as gum inflammation, persistent bad breath or even tooth loss.
But what is tartar, why does it form and how can we prevent it?
We explain it all here
What is dental tartar?
Tartar, also known as dental calculus, is a build-up of bacterial plaque that has hardened on the teeth due to the action of saliva.
Unlike soft plaque (which can be removed by brushing), tartar can only be removed by professional cleaning in a dental office.
Tartar can be:
Supragingival: on the surface of the tooth, visible.
Subgingival: below the gum line, more difficult to detect and more dangerous.
Why is it important to prevent tartar?
Tartar not only darkens teeth and makes your smile look bad. It is also a breeding ground for bacteria that cause:
Gingivitis (red, swollen, bleeding gums)
Periodontitis (affects the bone and can cause tooth mobility)
Halitosis (chronic bad breath)
Increased risk of tooth decay
And the worst thing: once it forms, you can’t get rid of it at home. That’s why prevention is key.
Tips to prevent dental tartar
1. Brush properly 2 times a day
Use a soft-bristled brush and proper brushing technique (gentle, circular brushing, not forgetting the gum line).
2.Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily
The toothbrush does not reach all areas, especially between the teeth. Daily flossing helps to remove plaque where tartar most often accumulates.
3. Alcohol-free mouthwash
An antimicrobial rinse helps reduce bacteria and maintain fresh breath. Use it as a complement, not as a substitute for brushing.
4. Avoid smoking and limit coffee or tea.
5. Watch your diet
Reduce consumption of simple sugars and acidic drinks. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and natural water helps to keep the mouth cleaner.
6. Visit the dentist every 6 months
Only with professional cleaning can you remove tartar that has already adhered to the teeth and prevent it from progressing to more serious problems such as periodontitis.
Professional tartar removal treatments
Dental prophylaxis (professional cleaning):
The most common and effective treatment. An ultrasonic device is used to break up tartar without damaging the enamel. It is painless and quick.
Curettage or deep cleaning (if subgingival calculus is present)
Indicated when tartar has advanced under the gums. It is performed under local anaesthesia and prevents the progression of periodontal diseases.
Tooth polishing
After cleaning, the dentist can polish the teeth to smooth the surface and delay new plaque adhesion.
Frequently asked questions about tartar
Does tartar disappear with electric toothbrushing?
No. An electric toothbrush can be more effective than a manual toothbrush in removing plaque, but tartar that has already formed can only be removed in the dental surgery.
Does it hurt to remove tartar?
No. Ultrasonic cleaning is quick and usually painless. If there is a lot of sensitivity, local anaesthesia can be applied.
Can I get tartar even if I brush well?
Yes, if you don’t floss or if your saliva favours mineralisation. That’s why regular professional check-ups are important.
