Hearing a ‘click,’ crack, or pop in your jaw when you open your mouth, chew, or even yawn is more common than you might think. However, although in many cases it is not a serious problem, it can be a symptom of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or habits that are affecting your oral health.

What is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?

The TMJ is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull, just in front of each ear. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, as it allows upward, downward, forward and sideways movements. Thanks to it, you can speak, chew and express yourself.

Why does the jaw crack?

The crackling sound can have multiple causes. The most common include:

1. TMJ disorder

This is one of the most common causes. It occurs when there is a problem with the structures of the joint: muscles, articular disc or bones. It may be accompanied by:

Pain in the jaw or around the ear.
Difficulty or limitation when opening the mouth.
A feeling of ‘locking’ or blocking.
Headache or neck pain.

2. Bruxism (grinding or clenching of the teeth)

2. Bruxism (grinding or clenching of the tee

3. Displacement of the articular disc

The TMJ disc acts as a shock absorber between the bones. If it moves out of place, it can cause the famous ‘click’ or popping sound.

4. Malocclusion

When your teeth do not fit together properly when you close your mouth, excessive tension is generated in the joint, which can lead to joint sounds.

5. Trauma or injury

A blow to the jaw or face can directly damage the joint or alter its normal function.

6. Stress

Stress can trigger muscle tension and jaw clenching, increasing the risk of TMJ disorders.

When should you consult your dentist or specialist?

Not all jaw clicking is serious, but you should see your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Pain when opening or closing your mouth.
  • A feeling of blockage.
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking.
  • Frequent and annoying noises.
  • Persistent headache, neck pain or earache.

Possible treatments

  • Bite splints (for bruxism).

  • Physical therapies and jaw exercises.

  • Bite correction.

  • Stress management.

In complex cases: treatment with a maxillofacial or TMJ specialist.

Jaw clicking may be benign, but it can also be a sign of a functional disorder that should not be ignored. The earlier it is diagnosed, the simpler and more effective the treatment will be.
